Lenovo ThinkPad T14s G2 (AMD): A First Look
Looks like my choice of Dell E6410 at the time was by chance really good. Seeing now what the competition was, both HP and Lenovo were far inferior in many aspects. Compared to 6410 this here looks like it was designed by clowns. BTW, watching this and commenting on E6410. No plans to give it up any time soon. Actually want some more of them.
Thanks for the great review! Would you ever review the Z13?
If I ever get the chance, I absolutely would.
upgradebily ram?
Between these it is the 16:10 display.
It makes so much sense, especially for programmers.
Can you share more about the specific application for programming?
My employer is getting rid of a bunch of laptops including these. I'm on the waiting list to purchase one for the equivalent of $55. Slap Linux on it and I can hand off my current laptop (Ideapad Flex 5, with similar specs) to my wife! For the both of us laptops are not a necessity. My wife barely uses a laptop outside of work (for which she has her work laptop) and I casually use a laptop for watching shows and occasionally for productivity. But I also have a PC and a Steam Deck I can use. And we have an iPad, but for media viewing I would like something that uses their screen a little more efficient. $55 for a 2 in 1? That's no more dualbooting for a serious bargain.
Crazy good price!
'Well Buit, Needs Brightness" what a weird title
Oops. Missed a letter. Thanks for pointing that out.
Just fired up my T60p. No reason.
No reason needed. 👍
Great review. I have the same computer. Cool little machine! And my lid for the hdd is gone too. Ive been looking for a replacement, but to no avail.
They are out there. I wonder if anyone has 3D printed one yet.
@@LaptopRetrospective Oh, I wish I had a 3D printer. :)
still waiting for my order 4 years later lmao
Heard a couple stories like this unfortunately.
It looks interesting if you need the 4K output on a hub.
Maybe one day I'll have a 4K PC monitor. 😂
Ah yes, the linux usual, thinkpads Thank you, ThinkPad
It's always disappointing to always see US$ prices. But the unit looks interesting, I wonder if there's a AliExpress equivalent.
The US dollar always makes my Canadian wallet sad. 😂
i have an l540 that i picked up for 70 dollars and i hate the stock trackpad so much and i wanted to see if i can swap out the old one and this video helps, so im adding this to the mod list i have planned. THANK YOU
Glad to be of service.
So if the laptop has an internal battery, and you removed the external battery while it’s on, the laptop will switch to the internal battery instead and NOT power off, right? I know it’s a stupid question, but I want to make sure that’s how it works. I ordered an internal battery from AliExpress from a popular store called KingSenar. the battery worked without any problems, except when I remove the external battery, it shuts down. This defeats the whole purpose of internal battery?. Im planning to return the battery unless that’s normal. I would appreciate it if you did this little experiment.
How much is the charger
As in cost or specs?
Why
The transportation company I worked for in 2006 was still using RS6Ks until a couple months ago (2024).
Wow!
I have replaced HDD with SSD & RAM from 4GB to 8GB. With these changes I am getting on my i5 CPU. I purchased a second hand with some school Windows license. It is without camera & Bluetooth, can I put camera some way? Or have to use an external webcam. I am fine without Bluetooth so far & when I need a Bluetooth dongle would be a cheap solution. Also, can it be updated to Windows 11?
Depending on what you paid, it may not be cost effective to install a webcam. Bluetooth is often integrated with the WiFi card now. Unofficially you could use Tiny11 to run Windows 11 if it isn't 8th gen Intel.
@@LaptopRetrospective it is i5 4300U. Not officially supported. Previous owner, a school, might not need Bluetooth so they ordered this way. I checked BIOS Bluetooth is not there.
One of the few brands that can survive UPS...
Most of the time anyway. :D
Actually, the DP out is on the digital dock connector. Just not added to the side ports. The second speaker (stereo) is on the left under the ExpressCard slot
At the time, neither Android nor the ARM CPUs were ready for something like this. And with netbooks slowly disappearing after 2010, the interest in such a "Smartbook" category was probably not there anymore.
Probably a factor. I also think people were warming up to the idea of the new wave of smartphones having much of the same capabilities.
I still remember being disappointed by ThinkPad 25. David sent out a lot surveys asking what we want the Thinkpad 25 to be, and instead we got a T470 with the classic keyboard, (and various types of trackpoints).
I remember him telling me all of the things he and his team wanted to do but it didn't work out. Certainly wasn't for a lack of trying.
I have this very machine and i love it. I was thinking of dual boot linux as it is stuck in windows 10, yet yours is running windows 11! How?
8th generation Intel supports Windows 11. Unless you have 7th gen CPUs in there. Tiny11 is an alternative.
It’s a indestructible computer like Nokia
Unfortunatly in 2019 the retailers at a popular tech store scammed my poor not techy mom into overpaying a LOT for it, still using it to this day unfortunatly but i know it can take rage punches when it frezes because im opening chrome and i have the version with the optical drive, when i give it a *love tap* on the left part a cloud of dust comes out of the fan. After all rating? -10/100
Ah sorry to hear that. Thanks for sharing your experience.
What is the strongest model among them that is resistant to shocks and water?
Great question. I've only tested this model.
I upgraded mine to 16 gb ram 1tb msata ssd and two 1tb ssds in raid and a 1080p lcd to bad the nvs4200m sucks
Yeah, eventually you run into a limiting factor. Nice upgrades though!
Hi, I just wanted to share that I have an x300 which initially didnt seem to have been opened before and did not appear to have any flexing in the hinge region, however after I took it apart and put it back together to change the thermal paste, that problem suddenly emerged. It seems to be caused by the screws in the hinge region not being tightened down fully and making the thin back panel withstand the forces from the hinge rather than the chassis. Simply tightening them with more force fixed it, but the screws were really quite stiff and I needed to press down a bit as well to get it to tighten fully which was why I missed it the first time. A post I found in a german forum later on confirmed this as well, I hope it helps on yours too :)
I suspect we read the same forum post/source. The screw being tightened may be a fix or it might do something else related to the whole mechanism. It could also be more related to age and state of the hinge. All things equal, don't want to break these machines.
@@LaptopRetrospective I guess that's just something we all have to keep in mind with such old machines, unfortunately the rubber coating on mine has gone all sticky and I had no choice but to scrape it off the palmrest. by the way, how did you get your hands on a bay battery for this? I haven't been able to find a source, do you mind sharing?
@kevingoh5391 I by chance found one online, had someone local buy and ship it. Never saw another. There also exists a HDD caddy bay but I've never seen one for sale.
Is taht 4.0 or 5.0 bluetooth version? Thank you.
4.0
Found one T41 in scrap two days ago, and its working! Only thing is when i play sth on it after few minutes the screen is blurring. When you dont use it much, like listening to music - nothing happens with it. Whats the matter?
Interesting, what do you mean by "nothing happens"?
@@LaptopRetrospective nothing happens i meant everything is working fine. Just wanna add - if the blurring starts, then i just leave the pc idle for 2 - 3 mins, and everything is going normal
@Franeq09 very strange indeed!
I got one with the 1440p screen, 16GB memory and a 500GB SSD for about 150 euros. It was a steal, lighter than and roughly same dimensions than my MacBook m1 air! Insane how much I like this little machine...
Very cool! Nice setup btw.
Is it supported to replace cpu from 10th gen to 11th?
Came for the hardware, stayed for the font.
😎
not working keyboard light
Spacebar have the pictogram for a backlight or does it need to be replaced?
backlit keyboards suck! it's barely more legible than ambient lighting, it's distracting, and it's usually worse legibility than the keyboard normally has, by a lot!
I was working on the dark yesterday on my laptop and wished for a ThinkLight. 😁
old ThinkPads like this are overall just way better than a lot of the shit you can buy now, my T410 cost me about $60 and with an SSD, runs Windows 10 LTSC just about perfectly.
It's true, but my recommendation is that you switch to Linux or Windows 10 *IoT* Enterprise LTSC
Would this be able to run editing software atleast relatively smoothly?
Entirely depends on the complexity of the project and resolution of the footage.
El maletin sufrira más daño que la laptop xd
Agreed! Keep the laptop safe.
@@LaptopRetrospective 0:0
what about the fan? do i need to disassemble everything to reach to it?
For details, see the hardware maintenance manual. 👍
Thinking about getting one of these. What version of linux would you recommend? I’ve used linux based OS’s like raspbian in the past.
Mint is a good place to start I find. Then you can decide what you value or prefer from there.
@@LaptopRetrospective sounds good. Thanks for the quick response!
Bit of a late comment, but I recently got an used Helix with an i5 processor that has a nearly 3cm diameter bubble on the screen. The worst part is that some of the glue from the display is actually leaking through the borders of the screen and it makes a bit of a mess near the ESC key. But other than that, I really like this machine!
oh yeah tom hardy
The absolute most useful video ive watched today. I was dreading doing an upgrade for my wife and i think im happy enough to do it now.
Glad this was able to help!
Would you mind telling me what screwdriver that's in this video? Looks really nice and am curious. Absolutely love these revisit style videos to "older" laptops as well. Recently became a member of the Thinkpad community and now have a bit of a collection going. 😅
It's a Mastercraft branded set from Canadian Tire I bought years ago. Glad to have another collector in the community. I cover new to old on this channel and collect the history of them from those who were there. 😁
My dad bought this exact model when it was brand new. It cost about 1000+ dollars
Amazing how things change over time.
I have a t450s. Very good.
Nice!
Bought one of these for $79 shipped and its honestly really good for the money and I would recommend it as a good starter
Glad you got a good deal.
What awful intro music.
To each their own. 😂
I only use a backpack along with my job's documents and peripherals XD
Nice, I haven't used a backpack as a daily carry for a while now.
@@LaptopRetrospective I'm bringing too many peripheral for my job so I can't stuff em up on a carry bag 😭😭
